Tattoo Styles Explained: How to Find Yours
Walking into a studio knowing the name of the style you want makes everything easier. Most tattoos fall into a handful of recognisable styles, each with its own strengths and its own specialists. Here is a plain-English guide to the main tattoo styles and how to pick one.

Realism
Photorealistic portraits, animals and objects, in black and grey or full colour. Realism needs an artist with a real eye for light and contrast, and it needs room: small, busy realism blurs as it heals. See realism in Barcelona or in Berlin.
Black and grey
Built from black ink diluted to greys, this style covers everything from soft portraits to bold religious and Chicano work. It ages gracefully and is one of the most versatile choices.

Fine line
Thin, delicate single-needle lines: minimalist designs, botanicals, small symbols and script. Elegant, but placement matters because thin lines fade faster on hands and feet. See fine line in Barcelona.
Blackwork
Bold, solid black: ornamental patterns, linework, blackout panels and graphic designs. It is striking and reliable for covering old ink. Explore blackwork in Barcelona.

Japanese (irezumi)
Dragons, koi, hannya and waves, built with strict rules of flow and background. Japanese designs are made to grow into sleeves and back pieces. See Japanese in Barcelona or in Berlin.
New school and lettering
New school is bold, cartoonish and colourful, with exaggerated shapes. Lettering and script cover everything from a single word to large quotes, where the spacing and font carry the whole piece.

How to choose a style for your idea
Start from what you want to show, then match it to a style and an artist who specialises in it. The same idea looks completely different in fine line versus blackwork. If you are unsure, bring your references and we will suggest the style that suits your idea, placement and how it will age. Browse styles across the portfolio and meet the artists.
